Wang Jisi Conducts Academic Research in New York and Washington, D.C.

From October 7 to 16, 2024, Wang Jisi, Founding President of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU), and Professor at the School of International Studies (SIS), PKU, visited New York City and Washington, D.C., at the invitation of the Chubb Insurance Company, the Asia Society Policy Institute, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). During his visit, he engaged in academic research and related activities.

On October 11, Xie Feng, Chinese Ambassador to the United States, accompanied by Minister-Counselor Peng Douyi and others, met with Wang Jisi and invited him for dinner. During the meeting, Ambassador Xie shared profound insights into China-U.S. relations.

From October 11 to 16, Wang Jisi held meetings with various U.S. officials in Washington, D.C., including Kurt Campbell, Deputy Secretary of State; Leah Bray, Chief of Staff to the Deputy Secretary of State; Ely Ratner, Assistant Secretary of Defense; Sarah Beran, Senior Director for China and Mongolia Affairs at the National Security Council; and Mark Lambert, Assistant Secretary of State and Head of the Office of China Coordination. Additionally, Wang Jisi also met with Kevin Rudd, Australian Ambassador to the United States and former Prime Minister of Australia.

During his visit to New York and Washington, D.C., Wang Jisi also met with other prominent U.S. figures, including Stephen Hadley, former National Security Advisor to the President; James Steinberg, Dean of School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University and former Deputy Secretary of State under the Obama administration; Stephen E. Biegun, former Deputy Secretary of State under the Trump administration; Susan Thornton, Senior Fellow at Yale University and former acting Assistant Secretary of State; Craig Allen, President of the U.S.-China Business Council; Thomas Friedman, columnist for The New York Times; Ryan Hass, Director of the Brookings Institution’s China Center; Derek Scissors, Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute; Christopher Johnson, Senior Fellow and a veteran China analyst of the Center for China Analysis at the Asia Society Policy Institute; Jing Qian, Co-Founder and Managing Director of the Center for China Analysis at the Asia Society Policy Institute; Scott Kennedy, Senior Advisor and Trustee Chair in  Chinese Business and Economics at CSIS; Yun Sun, Co-Director of the East Asia Program and Director of the China Program at the Stimson Center; Jessica Chen Weiss, Professor of China Studies at SAIS; Rick Waters, Managing Director of Eurasia Group's China practice; Jeremie Waterman, President of the China Center at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and Daniel Kurtz-Phelan, Editor of Foreign Affairs.

On October 9 and 14, Daniel Russel, Vice President of the Asia Society Policy Institute and former Assistant Secretary of State, and Rush Doshi, Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and former Senior Director for China at the National Security Council, hosted roundtable discussions in New York and Washington, D.C., respectively. They invited Wang Jisi to share his views on U.S.-China relations with the audience from various sectors in the United States and answer related questions.

From October 9 to 10, in New York, Wang Jisi, in his capacity as a member of the International Advisory Board of the Chubb Group, attended the board's annual meeting and met with Evan Greenberg, President of Chubb.

Wang Jisi had in-depth and candid exchanges with U.S. participants on topics including international affairs, U.S.-China relations and U.S. domestic politics. He expressed his gratitude for the support and guidance of the PKU’s Office of International Relations, SIS, and relevant leaders. He also acknowledged the generous support of several Chinese entrepreneurs for this visit.
