[Global Times: Correspondent Wang Xiaoxiong] According to a report on the website of American think-tank Asia Society on 10th, Asia Society Policy Institute will launch a new program to study the possibility of setting up “Asia-Pacific Community” mechanism, aiming to manage and control conflicts and relieve tensions in this area.
It is Kevin Rudd, former Australian Premier and President of Asia Society, who initiated the investigation. This project will be supervised by a senior policy committee whose main members involve United States Deputy National Security Adviser Tom Donilon, Japan’s former Minister for Foreign Affairs Yoriko Kawaguchi, India’s National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon, Indonesia’s former Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa and President Wang Jisi of Institute of International and Strategic Studies at Peking University.
“Asia-Pacific region calls for a more powerful organization to remit political and security disputes around South Sea, East Sea and Korean Peninsula,” said Mr. Rudd, “is it a right time to establish and develop a pan-regional organization which is capable of handling regional strategic tensions?” American press reports said no such agencies existing in Asia-Pacific area for the time being except ASEAN Regional Forum or East Asia Summit (EAS), which were close but requiring reconstruction. Mr. Rudd expressed that the current institutions including EAS were under research. He asked: “Could we allow EAS to shoulder more audacious responsibilities and become ‘Asia-Pacific Community’ some day?”
