At the invitation of American Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Wang Jisi, President of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) led a delegation to visit the United States from July 5th to 8th, 2017, attending the release conference of the US side’s report under the China-US Think Tank Project hosted by CSIS in Washington. The China-US Think Tank Report has been a major achievement since the China-US Think Tank Project was established one year and a half ago. This project was the first attempt of parallel researches made by the think tanks of the United States and China. It was started to brew by the National Institute for Global strategy (NIGS), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and IISS, PKU from the end of November of 2015 and an intention of joint research with CSIS of the United States was reached in June of 2016. As the first attempt of parallel research by think tanks in the United States and China, this project was led by NIIS, CASS and IISS, PKU in China and CSIS in the United States, respectively. During this process, more than 40 experts and scholars from nearly 20 institutions in the two countries were organized to participate in the joint research. Both sides set up six groups to independently prepare and write the chapters of the reports. The two sides held several seminars in Beijing and Washington and each group also had repeated discussions. The report is divided into six chapters: Overview, Economics, Asia-Pacific, Military, Politics and Global Governance, which are all written by senior experts and young cutting-edge writers in various areas of China-US relations.
John Hamre, President of CSIS, gave an opening address at the US release conference. The following people attended the conference as representatives of the Chinese Sides: Wang Jisi, President of IISS, PKU, Zhang Tuosheng, Director of Academic Committee of the China Foundation of International Strategic Studies, Zhufeng, Executive Director of the Collaborative Innovation Center of South China Sea studies, Nanjing University, Li Yan, Deputy Director of the Institute of Information and Social Development, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, Diao Daming, assistant research fellow of the Institute of American Studies, CASS.
On May 22, the release conference of the Chinese Side’s report was co-held by NIIS, CASS and IISS, PKU in Beijing.
During his visit to the United States, Wang Jisi met with more than 10 government officials, heads of think tanks and experts on international issues, including Susan Thornton, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia Affairs, Leah Bray, Director for Chinese Affairs of National Security Council of the Trump Government, Ryan Hass, former Director for Chinese Affairs of National Security Council who had just left the post, John Hamre, President of CSIS, former Deputy Secretary of Defense, Michael Green, Vice President of CSIS and Director of the Department of Japan Studies, former Senior Director for Asia-Pacific Affairs of National Security Council and exchanged views on issues such as the China-US relations.
