From March 16 to March 18, 2018, a delegation led by Wang Jisi, President of Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU), left for Tokyo to participate in the 3rd Joint Meeting of China-Japan Committee of the Research Project entitled “Historical Understanding and the Future of Sino-Japanese Relations”. The project was co-hosted by IISS and Sasakawa Peace Foundation of Japan. Chinese participants included Cai Wu, former Minister of Culture, Wang Chaoguang, Vice Director of the Institute of World History (IWH), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASS), Wang Jisi, President of IISS, Prof. Li Hanmei, School of International Studies, PKU, Associate Prof. Guan Guihai, Executive Vice President of IISS, Associate Prof. Yu Tiejun, Vice President of IISS, Associate Prof. Gui Yongtao, Assistant President of IISS and Sun Yang, Associate Professor of School of History, Nanjing University. The Japanese attendees were Mr. Yuji Miyamoto, former Japanese Ambassador to China, Hatano Sumio, Professor at University of Tsukuba and Director-General of Japan Center for Asian Historical Records, Cabinet Office, Prof. Hiroshi Nakanishi, Graduate School of Law, Kyoto University, Prof. Nakamura Motoya, the Department of International and Cultural Studies, Tsuda University, Baba Kimihiko, Editor-in-Chief of Iwanami Shoten and Satoshi Saeki, Vice Editor-in-Chief of the Editorial Board, Yomiuri Shinbun.
The meeting focused on “China-Japan Relations after the World War II and the Historical Understanding between the two countries”. Following the opening speech addressed by Chairmen Cai Wu and Ambassador Yuji Miyamoto, the Chinese and Japanese Chairman of the Committee, Chinese and Japanese participants presented their research reports on the topic of the meeting respectively, and had an in-depth discussion. The committee members of both sides expressed their hopes that the results of the joint research will review the original purpose of the normalization of relations between China and Japan, and contribute to the further development of the bilateral relations.
