On December 1, 2020, Gui Yongtao, Vice President of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU), attended upon invitation the security sub-forum of the 16th Beijing-Tokyo Forum and had a frank and pragmatic discussion with Chinese and Japanese guests on how the two countries should work to maintain regional security environment and achieve peaceful coexistence.
Vice President Gui Yongtao pointed out that although China and Japan have respective positions when it comes to territorial issues and will not easily give in, they should not exaggerate each other's threats, and should not treat each other as security enemies. He pointed out that China and Japan should manage their differences and avoid exaggerating the gravity of the situation, as stated in the four-point consensus reached by the two sides in 2014. If some politicians and media are allowed to incite, it will hinder rational dialogue between the two governments and experts, and will make us unprepared for possible future regional security crises.
