From Nov 3 to 26, 2022, Wang Jisi, Professor at the School of International Studies (SIS) and Founding President of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU), was invited to the United Arab Emirates, U.S. and Germany for a working visit.
From Nov 4 to 5, Wang Jisi attended the Sir Bani Yas Forum held in Abu Dhabi organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of UAE, where he delivered a keynote speech in a topic themed "Impact of Great Power Competition on the Middle East". The discussion was moderated by Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia and President of the Asia Society of the U.S. At the forum, many senior officials, former politicians, experts and scholars from relevant countries, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, had in-depth discussions on the political, economic and security situation in the Middle East.
In New York, Wang Jisi joined a delegation led by Wang Chao, President of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, which held a "Dialogue between Former U.S. and Chinese Government Officials and Businessmen" with the U.S. delegation led by Maurice Greenberg, Chairman and CEO of C.V. Starr & Co. Inc., and gave a speech on "the Impact of U.S. Domestic Politics on its Policy toward China" and other issues on Nov 10.
In his capacity as a member of the International Advisory Board of the Chubb Limited, Wang Jisi participated in the company's annual meeting on Nov 9-10. According to Xinhua News Agency, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to the annual gala dinner of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (NCUSCR) on Oct 26, "congratulating Evan Greenberg, Vice Chair of the NCUSCR and Chairman of Chubb Limited and Chubb Group on receiving the recognition at the gala, and expressing the appreciation to the National Committee and its members for their longstanding dedication to the growth of China-US relations and the exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in various areas." Evan Greenberg is the son of Maurice Greenberg.
Wang Jisi visited several organizations in New York, such as the NCUSCR, the Asia Society and the Council on Foreign Relations, and exchanged views on China-U.S. relations and other issues with their leaders, including Steve Orlins, Kevin Rudd, Richard Haass and others. He also had a video conversation with Henry Kissinger, former U.S. Secretary of State and met with former senior U.S. diplomat Robert Blackwill.
On Nov. 11-12, Wang Jisi visited Yale University, where he delivered a speech on how to stabilize China-U.S. relations to students and faculty, moderated by Arne Westad, historian and Elihu Professor of History and Global Affairs at Yale University. Wang also had in-depth conversations with Yale economics professor Stephen Roach, law school professor Paul Gewirtz, history professors Paul Kennedy and John Gaddis and others about the world economic and political situation, China-U.S. economic relationship and humanistic exchanges, and the history of the Cold War.
During his visit to Washington, D.C. from Nov 13 to 17, Wang Jisi was given a warm reception and considerable assistance from the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. Wang met with Kin Moy, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs(EAP), and Rick Waters, Deputy Assistant Secretary for EAP (as the key officials for China affairs were in Bali, Indonesia, for President Biden's meeting with President Xi Jinping).
In Washington, D.C., Wang Jisi met with other U.S. personalities, including: Thomas Friedman, The New York Times columnist, David M. Lampton, professor at Johns Hopkins University, Terry Lautz, former Vice President of the Henry Luce Foundation, Bonnie Glaser, Director of the Asia Program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States, Yun Sun, Director of the China Program at the Stimson Center, Bonny Lin, Director of the China Power Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Jude Blanchette, the Freeman Chair in China Studies at the CSIS, John Hamre, President and CEO of the CSIS, Robert Zoellick, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, and Kenneth Lieberthal, former Director of the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution.
On Nov 15, Wang Jisi moderated a public presentation by Scott Kennedy, senior adviser and Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics at the CSIS. Kennedy was the first U.S. think tank expert to visit China's Mainland since the beginning of 2020 at the invitation of the IISS, PKU. He elaborated on his visit to China this September and October in his speech, and engaged in a dialogue with Wang Jisi on recent China-U.S. relations. More than 100 former U.S. politicians, experts, scholars and community leaders attended the event virtually or in person. Following the presentation, at a reception dinner hosted by the CSIS, officials from the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. and the U.S. Department of State delivered speeches in support of the event and explained their views on the direction of bilateral relations after the China-U.S. Bali summit.
From Nov 18 to Nov 25, Wang Jisi paid a visit to Berlin, the capital of Germany at the invitation of European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). During his visit, he had 15 meetings or panel discussions with representatives from the German politics, business community and think tanks, as well as Chinese leader of community overseas, Chinese-funded enterprises, and Chinese media in Germany. Representatives from the politics included the following notables: Christoph Heusgen, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference and Foreign Policy and Security Adviser to Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel for a long time, Norbert Röttgen, member of the Christian Democratic Party Presidium, member of the German Bundestag and member of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, Nils Schmid, spokesperson on foreign affairs for the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD, the ruling party) and member of the German Bundestag, Christian Aulbach, Head of Department for Foreign and Security Policy, Federal Chancellery, Wolfgang Silbermann, Director of the Department for International Affairs of the Office of the Federal President of Germany, Alexander Roth and Anne Braun, officers of Policy Planning Staff, German Federal Foreign Office, etc. Representatives from the business community included Wolfgang Niedermark, member of the Executive Board of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), Patricia Schetelig, Deputy Head of the Department for International Markets at the (BDI), etc. Think tank experts included Mark Leonard, co-founder and director of the European Council on Foreign Relations, Guntram Wolff, CEO of the German Council on Foreign Relations, etc. Wang Jisi had an extensive and in-depth exchange of views with these German representatives on global and European political and security situations, Sino-German relations and other issues.
Wang Jisi reaped great results from this visit, and expounded his views on China’s domestic and foreign policies after the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China on many occasions. Wang Jisi expressed his gratitude to the Office of International Relations, the School of International Studies and relevant leaders of Peking University for their support and guidance.
