IISS, PKU Hosts “Global Security Initiative” Sub-forum at the 2024 Global University Think Tank Conference

The Global University Think Tank Conference 2024 was held from December 11 to 12 at the Yingjie Exchange Center, Peking University (PKU). On the afternoon of December 11, the sub-forum entitled “Global Security Initiative: Opportunities and Solutions Beyond the Security Dilemma”, organized by the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) was successfully convened.

Featured speakers included: Prof. Wang Yizhou at the School of International Studies, PKU, and Director of the Institute of Regional and Country Studies, Nanjing University; Arancha González Laya, Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs at Sciences Po and former Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation; Wang Fan, President of China Foreign Affairs University; Moon Chung-in, Distinguished Professor at Yonsei University, former Special Advisor for National Security and Foreign Affairs to the President of South Korea, and former Chairman of the Sejong Institute; Prof. Wang Yong at the School of International Studies, PKU, and Director of the American Studies Center; David Monyae, Director of the Africa-China Research Centre at the University of Johannesburg. The meeting was chaired by Zhang Haibin, Vice Dean of the School of International Studies, PKU.

The sub-forum sparked vibrant and in-depth discussions on the significance of the Global Security Initiative, the varied roles played by major political actors in advancing the initiative, the close relationship between development, security, and civilization initiatives, and the role university-based think tanks can play in this context.

Young scholars participating in the meeting included Prof. Zhao Hongyan from the School of International Relations at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), Director of the Center for Public Diplomacy and International Communication, and Research Fellow at the Institute of National Security and Governance, and Research Fellow at the National Academy of Security and Governance; Associate Prof. Han Na, Executive Director of Research Base for International Governance of Cyberspace, People's Public Security University of China (PPSUC); Associate Prof. Wu Shengqi, the School of English for Specific Purposes, Beijing Foreign Studies University; Sun Youjin, Associate Researcher at the Academic Department of the Chinese Public Administration Society. Some faculty and students from PKU also attended the event.
