On the morning of December 9, 2024, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University hosted a seminar titled “The Taiwan Question in China–U.S. Relations: Practices and Reflections” at the North Pavilion.

The seminar featured Prof. Zhao Quansheng from the School of International Service at American University as the keynote speaker and was chaired by Prof. Wang Jisi, Founding President of IISS, PKU.

Participants included: Wang Shushen, Deputy Director of the Taiwan Studies Institute, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS); Chen Guiqing, Deputy Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs Studies, Taiwan Studies Institute, CASS; Zhang Wenzong, Deputy Director of the Institute of American Studies, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR); Shao Xinyu, Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of American Studies, CICIR; Chen Ye and Liu Yuanling, Assistant Research Fellows at the Institute of American Studies, CASS; Hu Ran and Wang Haixia, Postdoctoral Fellows and Assistant Research Fellows at the Institute of American Studies, CASS; Zhao Jianwei, Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Research Fellow at the School of International Studies, Peking University; and Chen Danmei, Research Assistant at IISS, PKU.

Prof. Zhao provided an analysis of the current state and future trajectory of China–U.S. relations and the Taiwan question from the perspectives of U.S. China policy and the “Indo-Pacific Strategy.” He also shared insights drawn from his decades of research on Taiwan-related issues. He emphasized the need to further promote economic and cultural integration across the Taiwan Strait and to proactively expand channels for people-to-people exchanges.

Following the keynote, participants engaged in discussions on China–U.S. relations, cross-Strait relations, and cultural exchanges.
