On March 31, 2023, the webinar on "Who Fights for Reputation: The Psychology of Leaders in International Conflict" was held, it was co-organized by Princeton University Press (PUP) China Office, Columbia Global Centers (Beijing), School of International Studies (SIS), Peking University (PKU) and Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU). The keynote speaker was Keren Yarhi-Milo, Adlai E. Stevenson Professor of International Relations and Dean of School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), Columbia University. Guest speakers included Zhang Qingmin, Professor and Chair of Department of Diplomacy and Foreign Affairs Management of SIS, PKU, and Yin Jiwu, Professor of School of International Studies, Renmin University of China (RUC). The webinar was moderated by Yu Tiejun, President of IISS, PKU and Professor of SIS, PKU.
Prof. Yarhi-Milo introduced the original theoretical framework based on the psychological achievements presented in her book Who Fights for Reputation: The Psychology of Leaders in International Conflict published by PUP in 2018, along with multiple research methods and a large amount of data and literature used therein, so as to explain why some leaders are more willing to defend their reputation through military power. Then, Prof. Zhang Qingmin and Prof. Yin Jiwu made profound analysis of Prof. Yarhi-Milo's book, and discussed possible future trends in foreign policy analysis and political psychology research in international relations.
After its publication in 2018, Who Fights for Reputation: The Psychology of Leaders in International Conflict was widely acclaimed in the community of studies of international relations, winning Distinguished Scholar Award in foreign policy analysis of Foreign Policy Analysis Section (FPA) of International Studies Association (ISA) and Best Book Award of Foreign Policy Section of American Political Science Association (APSA).
The webinar is the second thematic discussion of a series of academic conferences entitled "Frontiers in International Relations Theory" co-organized by IISS of PKU, SIS of PKU and PUP.
