Prof. Odd Arne Westad from the History Department of Yale University visited IISS, PKU for discussion with experts and scholars.

On the morning of March 14, 2023, Prof. Odd Arne Westad from the History Department of Yale University visited the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) and held discussions with 17 experts and scholars from IISS, PKU and the Renmin University of China. 

 


Prof. Westad shared his academic research progress, perception and experience in recent years. The scholars present at the meeting explored into issues such as study of the history of cold war and the historical and current situation of Sino-U.S. relations, etc. The meeting was presided over by Mr. Yu Tiejun, President of IISS, PKU and Professor of the School of International Studies, PKU. 

As a famous scholar in modern international history and global history, Prof. Westad is specialized in East Asian history since the 18th century. His representative works include “Cold War and Revolution: Origins of the Sino-Soviet Conflict and Chinese Civil War” and “Global Cold War: U.S.-Soviet Intervention in the Third World”. Currently, Prof. Westad is mainly interested in empires in Asia and the world and imperialist history, the launching of China's reform and opening up, and the impact of reform results on the global economy. Before teaching at Yale University, Prof. Westad successively served as a Professor for international history at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Chair Professor for U.S.-Asian relations at Harvard University.
