Prof. Wang Jisi Pays a Visit to the United States

From October 6 to 17, 2025, Wang Jisi, Founding President of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS) and Professor at the School of International Studies (SIS), Peking University (PKU), together with Hu Ran, Ph.D. at SIS, PKU and Postdoctoral Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, visited New York City and Washington, D.C. at the invitation of the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). They engaged in academic research and exchanges activities, holding candid discussions with U.S. counterparts on topics such as U.S. domestic and foreign policy, international developments, and China-U.S. relations.

From October 7 to 9, Wang Jisi and Hu Ran met in New York with Stephen Orlins, President of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (NCUSCR); Jan Berris, Vice President of NCUSCR; Daniel Kurtz-Phelan, Editor of Foreign Affairs; and Jing Qian, Deputy Director of the ASPI and Co-founder and Executive Director of the Center for China Analysis (CCA), among others.

As a member of Chubb Group’s International Advisory Board, Prof. Wang attended the company’s annual meeting on October 8–9, held meeting with Evan Greenberg, Chairman and CEO of Chubb and Executive Vice Chair of the NCUSCR Board of Directors. He also gave a lecture at the ASPI on “Trumpism and Its Implications for China–U.S. Relations.”

On October 13, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission Qiu Wenxing and Counselor Pei Yanjie of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States of America met with and hosted a dinner for Prof. Wang Jisi and Hu Ran. Minister Qiu Wenxing shared important insights on China-U.S. relations and other related issues.

From October 10 to 17, Wang Jisi and Hu Ran met with several U.S. officials in Washington, D.C., including Bolton Ford, Director for China at the National Security Council (NSC), The White House; Alvaro Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for China and Mongolia at the U.S. Department of War; and Lieutenant Colonel Michael Reed, Director for China Affairs at the U.S. Department of War. They also met with Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister and Ambassador to the United States of Australia

In Washington, D.C., Wang Jisi and Hu Ran also met with a number of prominent American officials and scholars, including Kurt Campbell, Chairman and Co-founder of The Asia Group and former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State; Daniel Kritenbrink, Partner at The Asia Group and former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs; Stephen Hadley, former U.S. National Security Advisor; Robert Zoellick, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and former President of the World Bank Group; Sean Stein, President of the U.S.-China Business Council (USCBC); Thomas Friedman, columnist for The New York Times; Jude Blanchette, inaugural Director of the China Research Center at the RAND Corporation, together with Associate Directors Jennifer Staats and Gerard DiPippo; Rush Doshi, Director of the China Strategy Initiative at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and former Director for China Affairs at the NSC; Paul Haenle, Managing Director and Head of the Asia-Pacific Policy and Strategic Competitiveness Division at J.P. Morgan Chase; Scott Kennedy, Senior Adviser and Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics at the CSIS; David Lampton, Senior Fellow and Professor Emeritus at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS); and Dennis Wilder, Senior Fellow for the Initiative for  U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues at Georgetown University and former Senior Director for East Asian Affairs at the NSC.

On October 10, Scott Kennedy hosted a luncheon seminar for Wang Jisi, which was attended by a number of American experts and scholars.

Wang Jisi and Hu Ran expressed their gratitude to the Office of International Relations and the School of International Studies, Peking University, the Institute of American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the relevant leaders for their support and guidance. They also extended their sincere appreciation to the many Chinese entrepreneurs whose support made this visit possible.
