On May 27, 2021, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) held the symposium entitled “Indo-Pacific Strategy under the Biden Administration: Progress, Prospect and Responses” and the Second Beige Salon at North Pavilion.

Experts and scholars from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Party School of the Central Committee of CPC, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, China Institute of International Studies, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, and other institutes were invited to conduct in-depth discussions. Relevant personnel from National Office for Philosophy and Social Sciences, Publicity Department of CPC, and International Department of the CPC Central Committee also attended the symposium. Guan Guihai, Executive Vice President of IISS, attended and delivered a speech.

The experts exchanged views on topics such as the overall conception and policy orientation of “Indo-Pacific Strategy” under the Biden Administration, the interaction around “Indo-Pacific Strategy” among the U.S., Japan and the EU, and the economic agenda and military deterrence under “Indo-Pacific Strategy” framework. They opined that under the background that the Biden Administration intends to promote long-term and strategic competition with China, U.S. “Indo-Pacific Strategy” was entering a new stage and would take more substantive measures in economy, security, ideology and regional mechanism and other aspects. However, the regional countries are not willing to see the fierce confrontation between the U.S. and China, so both countries should try to manage their disagreements and achieve healthy interaction.
