On the morning of November 5th, 2021, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) and Japanese Research Platform, SFC, Keio University co-organized the 5th Online Academic Seminar. Japanese participants include Prof. Tomoki Kamo, Prof. Koichirou Tanaka (田中浩一郎), Prof. Toshihiro Nakayama, and Prof. Jimbo Ken from Faculty of Policy Management, Keio University, and Kikuchi Yona, chief researcher of Japan International Forum. Chinese participants include Prof. Yu Tiejun, Vice President, IISS, PKU, Gui Yongtao, Associate Professor, IISS, PKU, and Zhao Minghao, Special Researcher, IISS, PKU, researcher, Institute of International Studies, Fudan University. Both sides focused on the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. They reviewed the reasons why America’s policy in Afghanistan ultimately failed and analyzed how the withdrawal will affect the America’s alliance system and the geopolitical landscape in East Asia. In addition, they also discussed China’s perceptions of and responses to the changes in Afghanistan.
