Author:Lyle Goldstein Date:2024-12-27

On the evening of December 25, 2024, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) hosted lecture series under the 82nd “North Pavilion Seminar” titled “U.S.-China Nuclear Rivalry and the Taiwan Question”. The lecture was delivered by Lyle Goldstein, Director of the China Program at Brown University and Visiting Professor at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. The event was moderated by Associate Prof. Gui Yongtao, Vice Dean of the School of International Studies and Vice President of IISS, PKU.

Prof. Goldstein pointed out that amid the current volatile international landscape, regional conflicts have become frequent, and uncertainties between China and the United States are increasing. He noted that China has maintained restraint on nuclear issues, adhering to the principle of no-first-use of nuclear weapons. He suggested that the United States should seriously consider reciprocating China’s goodwill by moving in the same direction. Prof. Goldstein emphasized that promoting communication and institutionalizing regular communication mechanisms would help reduce friction between the two countries.

During the Q&A session, Prof. Goldstein discussed with the audience on how to advance China-U.S. dialogue and the strategic and policy directions of two countries. (contributed by Liu Yuanying)
