On March 19, 2025, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) held a seminar titled “The Governance Orientation and Strategies of the Trump Administration and Their Impact on China” and the 23rd session of the North Pavilion Salon at the North Pavilion.

Experts and scholars from higher education and research institutions, including the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the China Institute of International Studies, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Renmin University of China, and Beijing Foreign Studies University, among others, were invited to the seminar for in-depth discussions. Prof. Yu Tiejun, President of IISS, PKU, attended the meeting and delivered opening remarks.

The North Pavilion Salon aims to foster deepened dialogue between theoretical research and policy studies, providing a platform for exchange of ideas among young and middle-aged scholars. At the seminar, experts focused on the governance orientation and strategies of the Trump administration and their impact on China, with discussions centered on domestic policies and foreign relations in the Trump 2.0 era. Topics included Trump’s efforts to restructure the federal government, U.S. policy toward China, China- U.S. competition in artificial intelligence, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the U.S. alliance system, etc. They pointed out that Trump seeks to reshape the operation of America's political, economic, and social systems, as well as redefine America's relationship with the world. His policy initiatives in the two months since taking office have been bringing profound changes to U.S. domestic and foreign affairs. However, they also noted that advancing these measures will inevitably incur economic costs and political consequences, and the effectiveness of these policies remains to be seen. The experts concluded that China should take a long-term perspective on the uncertainties brought about by Trump's governance in the United States and around the world, maintain strategic composure, act proactively, and strive to create greater certainty for both China’s own development and the broader global landscape.
