IISS, PKU Holds Seminar on "Technological Innovation and Great Power Competition" and the 19th North Pavilion Salon

On June 4, 2024, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) held a seminar on "Technological Innovation and Great Power Competition" and the 19th North Pavilion Salon.

The seminar invited experts and scholars from various universities and research institutions, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), China Institute of International Studies, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Renmin University of China, and Central University of Finance and Economics. Prof. Yu Tiejun, President of IISS, PKU attended the seminar and delivered the opening remarks. The seminar was chaired by Prof. Li Wei, Deputy Dean of the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China.

The North Pavilion Salon aims to promote deep dialogue between theoretical and policy research and provide a platform for scholarly exchange. At the seminar, Research Fellow Fan Chunliang from the Institutes of Science and Development, CAS delivered a keynote speech titled "The Evolution of the U.S. Technological Innovation System and Great Power Competition." Following this, experts focused on issues surrounding technological innovation and great power competition, with an emphasis on the implementation of U.S. technology and industrial policies, the relationship between technological innovation and manufacturing development, and the formation of a "technology alliance" by the U.S., covering specific areas such as chips and dual-use technologies. Experts noted that the post-World War II U.S. national innovation system forms the foundation of America's technological strength and ensures the achievement of its national security and prestige goals. They emphasized that competition in science and technology between nations is fundamentally a competition of innovation systems and that China should strive to build a national innovation system aimed at achieving high-level self-reliance and independence.
