On May 25th, 2023, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU), hosted a seminar entitled “Japan’s Transformational National Security Strategy and China-Japan-U.S. Relations” and the 12th “North Pavilion Salon” at the North Pavilion.
Experts and scholars from universities and institutes including Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, Xinhua News Agency, Academy of Military Sciences, etc. were invited to the event for in-depth discussions. Prof. Yu Tiejun, President of IISS, PKU, and Gui Yongtao, Associate Professor and Vice President of IISS, PKU, attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Lu Hao, Associate Director and Associate Research Fellow of Integrated Strategy Laboratory in Institute of Japanese Studies, CASS, presided over the seminar.
The North Pavilion Salon aims to promote profound dialogue between theoretical and political researches and provide a platform for interactions among young and middle-aged scholars. The participating experts focused on the characteristics and impact of Japan’s transformational national security strategy in the context of Sino-U.S. competition and discussed issues such as the Asia-Pacific Alliance of U.S., Japan’s military development, Japan’s national positioning, China-Japan Territorial Dispute, China-Japan Crisis Management. They pointed out that Japan, as a key third party involved in the Sino-U.S. Competition, is presenting a stronger willingness to shape the security landscape that is more targeted towards China. This has generated a negative impact on China-Japan relations. They opined that China should take into account the security needs of neighboring countries and strengthen its diplomatic and public opinion efforts in promoting the concept of maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait.
