Prof. Yuan Ming Meets with former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan

On the morning of Nov. 25th 2015, Ms. Yuan Ming, Vice President of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Professor of School of International Studies (SIS), Peking University (PKU), Chinese Director of United Nations Foundation, met with Kofi Annan in Beijing, former UN Secretary-General, the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize winner, President of Kofi Annan Foundation.
Prof. Yuan Ming and Mr. Annan exchanged their views on issues such as the situation in Syria, the European refugee crisis, relations between big powers, new technological challenges, and the strength of youth. They both agreed that enhancing the communication between generations is of great significance to the future development of our society.

Lamin Sise, Senior Adviser of Mr. Annan, Stephanie Lewis, Executive Officer of Kofi Annan Foundation, Sun Ying and Zhao Jianwei, Assistants from IISS also attended the meeting.

Background: From Feb.23rd to Aug. 2nd 2012, Mr. Anna was appointed the joint special envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League in Syrian crisis. He put forward six proposals to solve the Syrian crisis, including promise to cooperate with Anna in an inclusive political process led by Syrian people; call on all parties to cease fire and stop armed violence in all forms under the supervision of UN; take immediate steps to achieve humanitarian cease-fire for two hours every day and work on the exact time and approaches of cease-fire through effective mechanism; release those arbitrarily detained prisoners as soon as possible; make sure the journalists’ freedom of action throughout Syria; respect the legally-protected freedom of association and the rights of peaceful demonstration.
