On the afternoon of September 14, 2023, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU), held the seminar “Securitization of Current Sino-U.S. Relations: Causes and Solutions” in the North Pavilion. Prof. Robert S. Ross from Boston College and a researcher at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University was invited to attend. He delivered a speech on security and defense policies of China and the U.S., Sino-U.S. relations, and the security situation in East Asia. He pointed out that China's economic rise and strengthened national defense capabilities are posing increasingly severe challenges to the U.S. in terms of its security position in the East Asian region, so the U.S. will inevitably continue to unite its Asian allies to comprehensively contain China through military, trade, and technology policies to prevent a power shift in East Asia. At the same time, he believes that academic exchanges between China and the U.S. are very important for stabilizing the increasingly securitized Sino-U.S. relations. China has both the patience to improve Sino-U.S. relations to create a favorable international environment for its economic development and the great potential to surpass the U.S. in the military and economic fields in the future. Then he engaged in warm discussions and in-depth exchange with scholars, including Wang Jisi, Founding President of IISS, PKU; Yu Tiejun, President of IISS, PKU; Prof. Wang Yong from the School of International Studies (SIS), PKU; Associate Professor Niu Ke from the History Department, PKU; and Assistant Professor Qi Haotian from SIS, PKU on issues such as the future direction of Sino-U.S. relations, the domestic political dilemma in the U.S., and the role of AI technology in the military field. The meeting was chaired by Yu Tiejun, President of IISS, PKU.
