Bian Kaigui: 5G Network of the Next Generation - from Mobile Internet to Internet of Everything

Date:2019-02-28

On the evening of February 26, 2019, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) held the 30th North Pavilion Dialogue series lecture. The lecture entitled "5G Network of the Next Generation - from Mobile Internet to Internet of Everything" is conducted by Bian Kaigui, Deputy Director and Associate Professor of the Institute of Network Computing and Information Systems, School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, PKU. The lecture was hosted by Gui Yongtao, Vice President, IISS, PKU and Vice President, School of International Studies, PKU.

Bian Kaigui introduced the three stages of computer network development first, and then 5G network from the three aspects of key technologies, application scenarios and industry analysis. The computer network has experienced development from the traditional Internet to the mobile Internet and then to the "Internet of Things" that connects everything. Among them, it is people's demand for fast Internet access that drives the continuous progress of 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G technologies. 5G network has undergone a great change in terms of the base station and mobile terminal, making the Internet access increasingly faster to meet people’s need to online services.

Bian Kaigui believed that the network is divided into three layers, namely, the bottom technology layer, the upper application layer, and the profit layer. In the era of mobile Internet, the profit model of Internet companies mainly relies on advertising, which consequently has formed an "Attention Economy" that draws people's attention to mobile products such as mobile phones. Internet of everything is a vision, and Internet affairs without a mature profit model will die out. Therefore, this new profit model is extremely important for new things on the Internet.

Bian Kaigui pointed out that the key technology of 5G network of the next generation is a collection of technologies, which will provide an integrated distributed platform for computing, storage, network resources and connection in the "big connection era". This unified interconnection architecture can provide higher peak rates, time delays counted at milliseconds, lower costs and higher efficiency, which will provide the most powerful support for the age of connection of everything, such as key technologies including Massive MIMO and Network Slicing. Application scenarios of 5G network mainly include assisted driving, navigation, unmanned driving and Internet of vehicles, etc.

In the comment and Q&A session, Bian Kaigui had an in-depth discussion with teachers and students on the application of Internet technology in industry and agriculture, technology patents in China and the United States, etc. (Contributed by Huang Xiaoting)
