On February 7, 2009, CISS PKU hosted an “Expert Consultation Conference”. More than 20 participants from government sectors and research institutes took part in the conference, including several leaders and renowned scholars of Peking University.
The purpose of the meeting was to summarize the work CISS accomplished in 2008, and to outline the center’s plans for 2009, including research plans and other important aspects of CISS work, and to acquire advice from the attending experts. In addition, some experts took part in the meeting for a major research project of the Ministry of Education, led by CISS Deputy Director Prof. ZHU Feng. Lastly, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vice Minister HE Yafei, answered questions concerning the global financial crisis, China’s response and the diplomatic efforts being made. He also reported on the important issues in this years’ foreign relations agenda.
At the meeting, CISS director, vice president of PKU Prof. ZHANG Guoyou delivered a speech to thank the attending experts for their support to CISS. Afterwards, CISS Director Prof. WANG Jisi reviewed the research, publications and academic conferences conducted in 2008. He also expressed that in the new year, CISS will continue to uphold China’s modernization development strategy, by revolving research around major international issues and ensuring quality while completing the various research projects and commissions to CISS. Taking into account the increasingly complex challenges China faces and prospectiveness of strategic studies; Professor WANG Jisi said that the Center hopes to work in close cooperation with relevant government departments, in conducting assessments and predictions for the future international environment. CISS will continue to provide intellectual support for China’s foreign affairs. The experts agreed and then discussed how to provide objective, rational and comprehensive analysis of China's future international environment and the proper strategies to deal with the issues China faces.
In 2009 Professor ZHU Feng, Deputy director of CISS became the chief expert for the Ministry of Educations’ research project- "New Research on International Relations and Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics ". The project is to enter its implementation phase. The project proposal was an important part of this “Expert Consultation Conference”. CISS prepared for this proposal in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Education. At the meeting, seven well-known experts were invited to give their critique. They offered valuable recommendations on the overall research design, basic framework and focus. The experts also raised possible issues that may arise during the development of the project.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister HE Yafei was invited to attend the meeting and to report on some current issues. Deputy Minister HE Yafei gave comments on his personal experience in his position, and spoke about the current international environment China faces, the financial crisis, the focus of diplomatic efforts and difficult issues to be addressed this year. The meeting was presided over by CISS Deputy Director Prof. YUAN Ming.

Members from various military departments and leadership from PKU Department of Social Sciences, CISS Board of Directors member ZHU Weilie, CUI Liru, YANG Yi, ZHANG Tuosheng, WANG Yizhou, CISS Deputy Director NIU Jun, and Prof. WANG Zhengyi also attended this meeting.
