Jointly organized by the Tokyo Foundation and CISS, the Second Japan-China Next Generation Security Dialogue and public symposium were held at the Tokyo Foundation between 29 and 30 January, 2012. Six scholars from both countries attended the dialogue chaired by Associate Professor Ken Jimbo of Keio University and Professor Zhu Feng of Peking University. The NGSD provides a platform for security experts in Japan and China to exchange views and discuss the prospects of regional security in the coming age.
The presentations and discussions of the dialogue focused on the following topics: 1) U.S. Re-Engagement in Asia and East Asian Security Order, 2) Northeast Asia Security and the Korean Peninsula, 3) Asia-Pacific Regional Security Cooperation, 4) Next Step for Japan-China Security Relations. The scholars also exchanged their views with Yoshimasa Hayashi, Member of the House of Councilors (LDP), Masafumi Ishii, Ambassador for Policy Planning and International Security Policy, Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Nobushige Takamizawa, President of the National Institute of Defense Studies (NIDS) in three special sessions.
On January 30, in the public symposium, the scholars talked on the theme of “Japan-China Security Relations in the Era of Power Shift” and took questions from the audience. Professor Zha Daojiong of Peking University and Associate Professor Yu Tiejun, Secretary General of CISS, also participated in the above events.
