Mr. Hiroshi Hoshi, Special Editorial Committee Member of Asahi Shimbun Pays a Visit to IISS, PKU and Delivers Keynote Speech

On March 19th, 2015, Mr. Hiroshi Hoshi, special editorial committee member of Asahi Shimbun paid a visit to the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) and delivered a speech titled "Current Status of the Abe Administration and its Policy towards China". The speech was moderated over by Dr. Yu Tiejun, Associate President of IISS, PKU, interpreted by Dr. Bai Zhili, Associate Professor of the School of Government (SG). Dr. Li Yu, Director and Professor of the Center for Japanese Studies (JSC), Prof. Liang Yunxiang and Associate Professor Fan Shiming of the School of International Studies (SIS), Wang Xinsheng, Professor of the Department of History and scholars of related fields, such as Mr. Yoichi Kato, senior journalist of the Asahi Shimbun who is a visiting scholar at SIS, PKU, as well as some students attended this meeting.

 

Mr. Hiroshi Hoshi started his speech from the vote shares of each political party in the recent three general elections in Japan and laid special emphasis on several major issues confronting the ruling Liberal Democratic Party recently: adjustment of Japan's security policy, speech in commemoration of the forthcoming 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, and financial policy and effects of the Abe administration. Mr. Hiroshi Hoshi opined that the ultimate difficulty facing the Abe administration is how to improve Japan's finance. Concerning the hot topic of year 2015, i.e., "70th Anniversary of End of World War II" Dialogue, Mr. Hiroshi Hoshi analyzed the standpoints of relevant think tanks and the international situation, and concluded that Prime Minister Abe will, to a great extent, maintain the spirit of "Murayama Statement" of Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama 20 years ago.

 

After the speech, Mr. Hiroshi Hoshi and the scholars and students present launched the Q & A session concerning the selection of members who attended the panel of "The History of the 20th Century and on Japan’s Role and the World Order in the 21st Century " and their background, the practical significance of Japan's peaceful constitutional amendment, influence of small electoral districts reform, and international responsibilities of Japan's media etc, which achieved good effects.


Mr. Hiroshi Hoshi joined the Asahi Shimbun in 1979 and began to work in the Political News Department in 1985. He is in charge of reporting Prime Minister, the Liberal Democratic Party and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; he became the editorial committee member in charge of the political affairs from 2000 and has been working at the current post from 2013. He is a famous journalist and columnist in Japan and knows quite well about Japanese politics.
