From May 21 to May 22, 2016, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) and the National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) co-organized the Sino-U.S. bilateral symposium on “Strategic Issues in Global Politics”. The symposium was funded by the China-United States Exchange Foundation.

As the largest developed country and the largest developing country in the world, both the United States and China hold unavoidable responsibility for the world’s political and strategic stability. It will not only benefit mutual future development, but also determine the world peace, prosperity and stability for people from the strategic sectors of the two countries, especially the growing elites, to conduct dialogue and seek consensus.

The young and middle aged scholars and policy analysts who are active in the strategic sectors of the two countries were invited to the symposium. Going beyond the bilateral framework of the Sino-U.S. relationship, they exchanged study results and elaborated their respective key concerns on the comprehensive, global and forward-looking problems that impact both the current international situation and the trend of future world order. 

The symposium was divided into six units: (I) The overall judgment on the global situation; (II) Geopolitical concerns; (III) Global governance and geo-economics; (IV) The power transition and the change of international rules; (V) The influence of factors of domestic affairs on the bilateral relationship; (VI) The current situation and cooperation prospect of Sino-U.S. strategic studies.

At the end of the symposium, Prof. Wang Jisi, President of IISS, PKU, delivered an address, stating that the symposium aimed to promote communication between the elites from the academic and the policy communities of the two countries and bridge the gap between regional studies and comparative politics studies, Chinese issue studies and wider strategic studies as well as academic studies and policy studies by inviting scholars and experts of various fields to discuss the major strategic matters. All participants said that they hoped to continue such beneficial dialogue into future so as to reinforce communication between the strategic communities of the two countries.
