From May 19th to May 20th, 2018, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS) at Peking University (PKU) and National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) jointly organized the third Bilateral Symposium of New Generation Chinese and American Scholars entitled “The Future of the World Order”. The symposium was held in the North Pavilion of PKU, with financial support from China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF), Ambassador Liu Fei attended and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony on behalf of CUSEF.

The participants of the symposium came from universities and think tanks in various regions of China and the United States. They strived to transcend the bilateral relations framework and discussed the past, present and future of the global order from the perspectives of security, technological innovation, domestic politics, and economics based on multilateral, regional, and global perspectives. Moreover, the participants shared their research results and clarified their key concerns.

The symposium was divided into seven major modules: (I)“Alternative World Orders?” ; (II)“Global Security And Grey-Zone Activities” ; (III)“Nuclear Weapons & Non-Proliferation”; (IV) “New Technologies & Strategic Competition”; (V)“Non-Traditional Security”; (VI)“Reducing Risks In U.S.-China Relations”; (VII) “Full Discussion And Conclusions”. This section was chaired by Guan Guihai, Executive Vice President of IISS.

Prof. Wang Jisi, president of IISS, made a speech at the symposium, explaining that the purpose of the symposium was to facilitate exchanges between a new generation of international scholars and think tanks from China and the United States. Scholars from different fields were invited to discuss major strategic issues with an attempt of narrowing down the gap between regional and international political research, as well as the gap between academic and policy research. The participants fully affirmed the importance of the symposium in communicating international strategic ideas of the two countries and looked forward to the continuation of this dialogue.
