On May 20th and 21st, 2017, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) and the National Committee on United States-China Relations co-organized a bilateral symposium for the new generation of Chinese and American scholars on the Global Impact of Domestic Policies at North Pavilion of PKU, funded by China-United States Exchange Foundation.

This symposium is an extension of the Dialogue between the new generation of Chinese and American scholars and think-tank experts of international issues held in May 2016. Coming fromvarious universities and think tanks in China and the U.S, the scholar representatives went beyond the bilateral framework of Sino-US relations to exchange their research accomplishments and clarified their main concerns onhow political, economic and societal factors impact the foreign policy making and strategy implementation process in both countries  from multi-lateral, regional and global perspectives.

There are six units in the symposium: I, the impact of domestic factors on diplomatic policies; II, threats, opportunities and policies under transnational security environment; III, deterrence, military intervention and exit strategy: peace and security in the nuclear age; IV, reducing risk in Sino-US relations; V, institutional reform and global rational future; VI, discussion and conclusion. In addition, a more flexible and free group discussion session was added, winning the approval from the attendees.

Prof. Wang Jisi, President of IISS, PKU and Prof. Yuan Ming, Vice President of IISS, PKU and President of Yenching Academy delivered speeches at the symposiumwhere they emphasized that the symposium was aiming to promote the exchanges between the new generation of Chinese and American scholars, as well as think-tank experts on international issues. Gap between regional study and international political study and gap between academic study and policy study should be narrowed. The attendees all affirmed the significance of the symposium for it provided exchange of  international strategic thoughts from both countries, and hoped it can be continued.
