At the noon of March 16, 2022, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) held a lecture entitled “No Fear of Floating Clouds Blurring Your Eyes — Discussion on Personal Cyber Security from the Perspective of Network Attacks and Defense” in the North Pavilion. The lecture was given by guest lecturer Mr. Zhou Changling, Director of Cyber Security Office of Computer Center, PKU and hosted by Gui Yongtao, Vice President of IISS, PKU and Vice President of the School of International Studies, PKU.
Mr. Zhou elaborated on the status quo and significance of cyber security from three aspects, namely hot events of international cyber security, cyber security events in daily work and life, and how to improve cyber security. He noted that universities were one of the key targets of cyberattacks. Technologies used in cyberattacks are complicated, but cyber security risks are mainly caused by the absence of security awareness rather than the insufficiency of technical ability. He showed various cyber security examples in work and life, indicating that in face of the currently common website attacks and phishing emails, we needed to improve the level of protection through technical means, find out what is missing and fill the gaps through cyberattack rehearsals, as well as raise our cyber security awareness in our daily work and life. He also made some recommendations on how to protect our information privacy and cyber security in daily life and work from the perspectives of password settings, antivirus software, email security and IoT device security.
At the end of the lecture, the audience discussed cyber security problems and confusions the they were confronted with in their daily work with Mr. Zhou.
