IISS, PKU Holds the Seminar on Great Power Games and Global Governance under the New Technological Changes & the 14th North Pavilion Salon

On September 27, 2023, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) held the seminar on "Great Power Games and Global Governance Under the New Technological Changes" & the 14th North Pavilion Salon.

Experts and scholars from such institutions as the Institute of International Strategic Studies of the Party School of the Central Committee of CPC (National Academy of Governance), the Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University, the Institute of International Relations of China Foreign Affairs University, the Pudao Credit Research Institute, and the School of International Studies at PKU were invited for in-depth discussions. Associate Professor Gui Yongtao, Vice President of IISS, PKU, attended the seminar and delivered a speech. The salon was chaired by Prof. Liang Yabin from the Institute of International Strategic Studies of the Party School of the Central Committee of CPC (National Academy of Governance).

The North Pavilion Salon aims to promote a profound dialogue between theoretical research and policy studies by providing a platform for exchanges among young and middle-aged scholars. The experts attending the Salon focused on great power games and global governance under the new technological changes, discussing key topics such as China-U.S. technological competition, insight gained from U.S.-Soviet Union technological rivalry, transnational corporations and geopolitics, dilemma in global technology governance. The specific areas covered include artificial intelligence, data industry, financial technology, outer space governance, and technology control, etc. They pointed out that both the technological competition exemplified by China-U.S. games and global governance under the new technological changes involve interactions among complex factors such as domestic politics, technological trends, and international rules. They believe that there should be more understanding and exchange among scholars and experts in economics, science and technology, and security on the history, theory, policy, and practice of great power technological development and competition.
