On the afternoon of September 28, 2022, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) held the forum entitled“New Developments in Great Power Competition and Alliance Politics” and the 9th “North Pavilion Salon”.Experts and scholars from various universities and research institutions such as Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Foreign Affairs University, Shandong University, Nanjing University, Fudan University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, Shanghai Academy of Global Governance and Area Studies, Sun Yat-sen University, and South China University of Technology were invited to the meeting for in-depth discussions. Yu Tiejun, President of IISS, PKU, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. 

“North Pavilion Salon” aims to promote profound dialogues on academic and policy researches, and provide a platform of exchange for young and middle-aged scholars. Experts at the meeting focused on supply chain alliance, infrastructure alliance, and science and technology alliance in international politics, as well as alliance politics in regions such as Pacific island countries, Northeast Asia, and Southeast Asia and put forward theoretical thinking on benign competition and alliance culture. The participating experts pointed out that the United States is accelerating the construction of a multi-level alliance and partnership system targeted against China, involving various areas like security, politics, economy and science and technology. However, it is difficult to cut off the relationship between relevant countries and China, and there are also many differences between the United States and these countries in terms of interest demands. They reckoned that China should pay attention to the development trend of alliance politics and try to achieve a better understanding of the interests and concerns of all the parties in the alliance, so as to actively manage the influence of great power competitions and geopolitics. At the same time, they believed that further opening up and cooperation should be promoted
