IISS PKU Holds Symposium Entitled “Changes in the U.S. Military Posture in the Asia-Pacific Region and Responses” and the Sixth” North Pavilion Salon”

On the afternoon of May 21, 2022, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) held a symposium entitled “Changes in the U.S. Military Posture in the Asia Pacific Region and Responses” and the Sixth Edition of North Pavilion Salon. 

Experts and scholars from the following institutions were invited for in-depth exchange and discussion: Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, Renmin University of China, National University of Defense Technology, Zhejiang University, Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, PKU, etc. Yu Tiejun, Vice President of IISS, PKU delivered a speech and participated in the discussion. The Salon was hosted by Li Chen, Associate Prof. of the School of International Studies, Renmin University of China. 

The ”North Pavilion Salon” aims at promoting deep dialogue between both theoretical and policy research. The experts at the symposium focused on three main issues: U.S. military strategy, military system and military posture, they analyzed the adjustment of the U.S. global and regional military strategy since the Biden Administration took office, especially after the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, assessed the transformation of the U.S. military system in recent years at both strategic and conventional levels, and discussed the impact of the U.S. strengthening of military alliances and security partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region on the security pattern around China. The experts believed that China should pay full attention to the significant reference of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict for the current military competition among major powers, focus on the development of the U.S. military layout in the Asia-Pacific region, respond to and resolve neighboring security challenges by accelerating the modernization of Chinese military forces, managing risk control and deepening communication and coordination with neighboring countries.
