Joint Research Report on the Knowledge of Sino-Japanese History (Pre-war Part): Why the War between China and Japan Broke out

In March 2016, the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) and Sasakawa Peace Foundation from Japan jointly launched a research project on “Understanding the History and the Future of Sino-Japanese Relations - A Strategic Dialogue between Chinese and Japanese Scholars with deep Insights”. The project aims to reach a certain consensus on the causes and background of the Sino-Japanese War from 1931 to 1945 and the development status of post-war Sino-Japanese relations through joint research on the history of Sino-Japanese relations by Chinese and Japanese scholars, then sort out the practical issues two countries are facing and explore the future Sino-Japanese cooperative relations on the basis of the two parties’ consensus on the knowledge of history. As a compilation of research results achieved in phase I of the project, this book includes 7 articles written by Chinese scholars and 8 articles written by Japanese scholars.
