Founding President Wang Jisi Visits New York and Washington, D.C.

From April 6 to 22, 2024, Wang Jisi, Founding President of the Institute of International and Strategic Studies (IISS), Peking University (PKU) and Professor at the School of International Studies (SIS), PKU, visited New York City and Washington, D.C. at the invitation of the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).


In New York, Prof. Wang Jisi met with Steve Orlins and Jan Berris, President and Vice President of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relation; Robert Blackwill, former senior U.S. diplomat; Daniel Kurtz-Phelan, Editor-in-Chief of American magazine Foreign Affairs; Daniel Russel, Vice President of ASPI; Susan Shirk, emeritus director and research professor at the 21st Century China Center at the University of California, San Diego; Daniel Rosen, Co-founder and partner of the Rhodium Group, among others. As a member of the International Advisory Council of the Chubb Group, Prof. Wang attended the group's annual meeting from April 10 to 11 and met with its president, Evan Greenberg. Prof. Wang gave a lecture on U.S.-China relations at the ASPI and held a seminar on U.S.-China economic and trade relations at the Rhodium Group.


In Washington, Prof. Wang was warmly received by Minister Jing Quan, Deputy Chief of Mission and other officials at the Chinese Embassy in the United States. He met with Daniel Kritenbrink, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs; Mark Lambert, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Coordinator for China Affairs; Sarah Beran, Senior Director for China Affairs at the National Security Council, among other officials. On April 18, Prof. Wang visited the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, where he exchanged views on U.S.-China relations with senior foreign policy advisors from both parties.

Prof. Wang also met with some other colleagues, including Craig Allen, President of the U.S.-China Business Council; Thomas Friedman, columnist for The New York Times; Stephen Hadley, former U.S. National Security Advisor to President; Ryan Hass, Director of the China Center at the Brookings Institution; Scott Kennedy, Senior Adviser and Director of the Project on Chinese Business and Economy at CSIS; Kevin Rudd, Australian Ambassador to the United States; Fareed Zakaria, host of CNN's political program; Robert Zoellick, former Deputy Secretary of State.

Prof. Wang had in-depth exchanges with American counterparts on international affairs, U.S.-China relations, and U.S. domestic politics, and gained significant insights. He expressed gratitude for the support and guidance from the International Cooperation Department and SIS, PKU. This visit was supported by several Chinese entrepreneurs, to whom Prof. Wang also extended his deep appreciation. Hu Ran, a doctoral student at SIS, PKU organized the itinerary and participated in Prof. Wang’s activities in the United States.
